Our Building's Story

Hershey was known for more than just chocolate. In 1936, Milton Hershey commissioned the construction of this building to create job opportunities for the community.

1936: The Hershey Abattoir

Construction began in January and was completed by October. The Abattoir processed and sold meats, and business grew so much that the building was expanded in 1967.

1937-1941: Cocoa Butter Soap Production

Mr. Hershey disliked waste and saw an opportunity to use surplus cocoa butter from the chocolate factory. Machinery was installed on the second floor to produce cocoa butter soap until production moved to a new facility in 1941.

1976-1980: Hershey Meats

The Abattoir was renamed Hershey Meats in 1976, expanding its operations to process and sell meats on-site. Production continued until June 1980, when the work moved to a new facility on Airport Road.

1984-2015: Post Office & Laundry

The building served as Hershey's Post Office from 1984 to 2015. The Hershey Laundry also occupied space here from around 2006 until 2015.

Today: Fresh Market at Hershey Towne Square

Our mission is to continue this building's legacy as a gathering place for the community. Join us as families and friends come together to make memories, start traditions, and support local vendors.
